On Thursday, the Lexington Fayette Urban County Council unanimously approved an ordinance adding e-cigarettes to the city’s smoke-free policy.

In practice, this means that e-cig users would be forbidden from using their devices in public buildings or the workplace, and would have to take the activity outside.  Ellen Hahn of the Kentucky Center for Smoke Free Policy says these devices are not a new phenomenon.

“E-cigarettes came to this country from China in 2007, only 7 years ago,” she said.

With the passage of the ordinance, Lexington will be the 8th Kentucky community to include e-cigs in its smoke-free policy.  Fayette County’s policy has been in effect since 2004.
